A Catharsis & Healing Time. By Rich Pavel
Said it before and we’ll say it again…we’re so damn lucky to receive this constant stream of the most amazing people, from as many if not more, walks of life. Here we are, this young company and like any form of youth, we are constantly influenced by exposure to this procession of knowledge, imagination and skills these people possess. The amazing thing is everyone’s been so ready to impart any and all, which in itself leaves us totally gob-smacked.
Recently Californian Shaper, surfer and an extremely generous person, Rich Pavel came to stay for a week. Long story short, he ended up staying for almost ten weeks. He didn’t leave us empty handed, besides the quiver of beautiful boards he shaped while here he found some time to jot down some words about what Bali, over this time, came to mean for him. Reading them we couldn’t help but feel a certain irony in seeing that student had become teacher. You see, we are now the student and came to see him as mentor, sounding board, role model and if you like… uncle. It’s only fitting that we share. Until next time “Uncle Rich”.
Catharsis & Healing time.

My time on Bali at DEUS is a life changing one. Proir to leaving for Bali I had just finished an important chapter of a man’s life. The passing of my most important Uncle had left me in a mode of contemplation and state of life’s reflection. Coming of age boy to young man my “Uncle Terry” Martin was a great influence. I had nearly universal access to to Uncle Terry growing up and while learning to design & shape it was only natural he would figure largely into my endevours. He is after all a most prolific and versatile iccon of our industry. Mentors can be of inestimmable value. Uncle Terry was all that and more. His role as an Uncle at large has allowed my life to be shaped in constructive and most meaningful dimensions.
This time at DEUS has afforded the very setting that led me from attempting to total my loss to counting the gain of what gift had been given to me in life. The remarkable crucible of creativity, energy, imagination and the place of expression to plug it all into has been epic.
Thank you DEUS.
