SCTA – Land Speed Racing at El Mirage
Eyes On The Line.
That’s Scott G Toepfer‘s motto, and he’s been on a mission for the last few years to make his 45 flathead Harley Davidson go real fast. Fast for a 45 flathead at least, which resides in the APS-500 class in the Southern California Timing Association currently with a 125.720mph record. Between speed trials, Scotty’s been making tweeks and twacks to make the bike go even just a fraction faster, and the opportunities to race out at El Mirage Dry Lake are few and far between so each run really counts.
This time Toepfer pulled a 86.431mph run for the day, not exactly what he was hoping for, but a nobel effort after running out of gears on the ol hand-shift. Back to the tinker table it goes.
One particular notable feat of the day was Alp Racing Design‘s pre-unit Triumph 650 shattering the 146.770 mph record in the A-VF 650 class, scoot’n along at 169.936 mph. CRIPES ALMIGHTY, JESUS GOD!
Kiyo raced his twin-engined GEKKO, a spectacular sight to behold in the lizard’s natural habitat, but unfortunately the 1620cc’s of raw Japanese power broke the primary chain at speed. He coasted the remaining mile to the finish line or so, clocking around 85mph…
Shinya and Ayu with quiet determination are on the quest for 130mph on SPIKE, the beloved beautiful brute of a knucklehead.
Like any good romantic comedy destined for a sequel, the Speed Trails came to a close as the sun set on El Mirage. The quest for speed continues…
