The Deus 9′ & Single Festival – Day 1
Phew…what a weekend it was for the 5th Annual Deus 9’ & Single here in Canggu, Bali! After a day’s rest we’ve started diving headlong into an epic and extensive pile of photographs and video. To kick things off we present you with a bloggo doggo from Thursday’s Deus Bali Fish Fry. With an eclectic array of wave riding craft planted on the grassy knoll down at Tugu Beach, board enthusiasts admired and rode through the morning. The girls and guys alike cross-stepped, trimmed and cut back on short, long, thick and thin surfboards. Once again, we were gifted with perfect surf and weather. The clean and open-faced Tugu walls were wonderful blank canvases for the various styles of riding.
That afternoon the kicker was pushed up against the rice paddies for an afternoon of mud-crab carnage as four chargers sent it over the infamous Temple Jump. The last minute event was a lucky addition to the 9’ & Single this year as the paddies were all in a pre-planting wet and muddy state. Though great to watch, the Temple Jump wasn’t for the light hearted, we saw all four go down hard with one of our own ending up in hospital. Zye Norris had a second crack and became the only one who stuck it. Nice work Zye!
As the sun set the masses gathered in our backyard for the 3rd Annual Shaper’s Forum. Up on stage to talk story were shapers Bob Mctavish, Neal Purchase Jnr, Thomas Bexon, Jye Byrnes, Tyler Warren and Chris Mchutchison. Bob was once again the star of the night; it was hard to compare to the mad man who’s been shaping since the 50’s. Two of the more interesting subjects of discussion were Neal PJ’s new Twin Single fin setup and a question directed at Thomas about where Longboard design is headed.
But let us not blabber, the night is long over and the photographs of the first day of the 2015 Deus 9’ & Single are here for you to enjoy.
A huge thankyou to the sponsors of the Deus 9’ & Single.
