Deus ex Machina (god from the machine) roared into Australia’s cultural consciousness in 2006, with some neatly customised motorcycles and a quaint notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. The Deus philosophy recalls an era before the various pursuits of fun – motorcycling, surfing, skateboarding, whatever – were divided into fundamentalist factions.

The one day trip up the coast; undervalued, overlooked, and often taken for granted. It’s the simplest form a road trip, and a staple of the surfing community. Usually the easiest decision we have to make.

But why do we pack the car to the brim, wade in traffic, with the looming possibility of showing up to a beach with no waves? Well, it’s times like these that provide the answer, because we never understand the value of something until it is taken away.

We do it because we can, we do it so when we are stuck in any situation we have something to look back on.

From a smile or even something deeper, a connection. Leaving us with the chance to do two things; reminisce on the memories that we’ve so delicately created, or throw the dart at the map and look at what lies ahead. Pondering the limitless possibilities of what can be done.

Whether it be north, south, east, or west, by plane, foot, boat or vehicle. What happens on these trips is indescribable, mainly because we just have too much fun.

So I recommend you get the band back together when the clouds clear, and ask where to next?

Friday night the 21st Feb the weather gods conspired to make it more than a bit of a miserable night. The fact the Deus Gallery at Bali’s Deus Temple of Enthusiasm wasn’t wall to wall with people wanting to see clever, fun and visually stunning art can be placed squarely on their shoulders.

That meant one thing though, there was more of the free flow wine, beer, and cider for those who grin and bore the squalls of torrential rain to welcome the artist to the space and take in all of his moto-inspired offerings of art.

Mastom, has received a lot from his motorcycle life. Not only has it given him the amazing experience that is riding, a passion and obsession of his for the last 27 years. But the motorcycle life is that place where he is finally capable of perfecting his ideas, concepts, hopes, and dreams. This passion for riding and distillation of everything else is what Mastom pours into the paintings and graphic arts that make up this solo exhibition, “Riding with The Wind, a Motorcycle Diary”.

Tommy Dwi Djatmiko, is Mastom. His motorcycle life started from a very young age and in fact, he’s been a member of the Bikers Brotherhood Motorcycle Club since 1993. In 2002 he opened Mary Jane Therapy design store. Then in 2008, he founded the custom motorcycle brand, Mastomcustom.

The show “Riding with The Wind, a Motorcycle Diary” is open 8 am – 10 pm seven days a week from 21 Feb until 22 Mar. During the exhibitions run, a Mastomcustom’s fully refurbished 1980’s Kawasaki 125cc GTO motorbike, which is on display in the exhibition, is being auctioned off online. A bike Mastom has affectionately called, as well as painted on the tank, “Leucopsar Roschildi” Which is Latin for Bali Starling.

Mastom will donate a part of the auction proceeds to the Begawan Foundation, which has been active in the Bali Starling Conservation and environmental education since 1996.

Exactly 969 kilometers from our French Flagship in Biarritz, Deus Ex Machina has given birth to its first high altitude prodigy, The POCKET OF TENACITY in Meribel, France.

Host of the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, Meribel is a pre-war ski resort in the French alps, created in 1938 by the Lindsay Family, which has approximately 2,000 inhabitants in it’s off season, and spiking to over 30,000 in the winter season.

We couldn’t have found a more welcoming, warm and unique location to set-up our first winter focused pop-up store, right here in the center of Meribel, in la Galerie des Cimes.

A powder sanctuary divided in two parts. Upstairs; the Adyton of our temple, a secret nest with our Deus Powder Tools capsule collection in its heart. Downstairs; the main stage, our bar where you can enjoy one of our finest cocktails as well as the best beers. A condensed venue full of potency and enthusiasm.

All the way from Japan, between “fromage de montagne” and fresh French powder, live’s the second home of Deus Power Tools.

À exactement 969 kilomètres de notre étendard français à Biarritz, Deus Ex Machina voit naître son premier prodige d’altitude : The POCKET OF TENACITY.

The fires in Australia may have abated although the need hasn’t. So when the Bali Roots Festival approached us here in Bali about putting on an event in the Deus Backyard, we said you bet, just tell us when…

Six of Bali’s best bands had said they’d be up to donate their time; THE HYDRANT, NAVICULA, MARAPU, RIVABA & DUNIA KETIGA… talk about the dream team of Bali’s rock music scene.

We know you don’t know the who’s who up here, so you’ll have to take it from us, completely and absolutely blown away by this line-up.

Hard-working show people like this we knew from the outset, getting them together for one night would be our challenge. As luck would have it, February 16th was when everyone’s calendar’s aligned.

Friends, local businesses and hotels around put stuff in so we could do raffles all night. We flogged tickets and pulled prizes out of a hat for the plethora of goods and services we’d gathered together to generate some cash to send to those that need some help in the fire-stricken parts of eastern Australia.

We had an amazing night. The Backyard was chockas with new friends and old all here happy to support and party, no one lost sight of the need to get together and dig deep for those left in a crap position by these recent developments in NSW, QLD & Victoria. As luck turned out for some lucky people they were able to get that perfect something for the perfect someone while helping out and having the best time while doing it! Is that a win, win, win? Situation?

We had some drinks sponsored by Bintang, Omrach Whiskey and Two Island Wines. So, people bought up big, knowing their money was going to charity.

A hub of gasoline culture in Los Angeles, the intimate and hidden parking lot of the Deus Emporium in Venice Beach is always full of surprises. Great ideas are synonymous with great coffee, and in our adjacent cafe plans and themes were brewing for our next Parking Lot d’Elegance. Why not a celebration of some of the most beautiful Italian cars ever built?

Early in the morning of February 8th, amidst the dense fog perched against the California Coastline, you could spot headlights. Pop-up headlights—those of the unmistakable Ferrari F40, followed by its turbocharged howl leading the way to the Emporium of Postmodern Activities. Enzo Ferrari’s final creation was the first to arrive, and placed center stage for our fifth Parking Lot d’Elegance. Close behind were the V12 heavyweights. Also from Maranello, a stunning 275 GTB in the classic Ferrari front-engine, long-hood grand touring layout. Born in the neighboring town of Bologna, Lamborghini’s HQ, was the 350GT and the marque’s first yet glorious attempt at a sports car. In addition to the genesis of Lamborghini was one of its greatest hits, the Countach. Oh, and there were two of them—one brought by Bryant Kreadon of The Car Shrink and the other by The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah.

Also in attendance were two cars from the eclectic collection of prolific American designer and producer of the film, ‘8 Mile’, Stuart Parr. The first, his Iso Grifo 7 Liter Coupe. While this car is powered by American muscle, its tailor is most certainly Italian, designed by Giorgetto Giugaro of Bertone. The second, was undoubtedly the show stopper—a funky Fiat 600 specially commissioned by none other than Gianni Agnelli as a luxury people carrier with plentiful greenhouse for dignitaries and VIPs touring Fiat’s Mirafiori factory. Just one of five ever built, and one of two believed to still exist, the presence of this car so far from home in Venice Beach was certainly beyond its creators wildest imagination.

Our Italian bouquet could not be complete, however, without Alfa Romeo. From a Giulia Super fitted with a picnic table, a 2600 Spider by Touring, to a colorful selection of GTVs, Alfa Romeos is both white and green represented two thirds of our makeshift Italian flag in front of our store welcoming enthusiasts arriving from all over of Southern California.

And the red in the Italian flag? A Ferrari Testarossa. Fitting, as Testarossa translates to ‘redhead’ in English. A yellow-black-yellow layout of Ferrari’s 355, 308 GTB and 308 GT4 completed our stable of prancing horses.

Our poster child, the Lancia Delta Integrale stole the hearts and minds as the icon of ‘80s and ‘90s. Behind, sat the genuine Lancia Fulvia ‘Fanalone’ of Retro Rally Group sampling Lancia’s rich pedigree in rally domination. Contrasting Lancia’s racing relics was the Lancia Appia, one of Italy’s predominant people’s car and an increasing rare sight on both sides of the pond. Playful pink and purple Fiats completed the spectrum of Italian design, spirit, and attitude.

While the cars were nothing short of magnificent, a Deus event is only as good as is the people attending it. Positive vibes and great crowd from all automotive subcultures made for an incredibly special gathering and atmosphere. The passion behind our ‘In Benzin Veritas’ philosophy continues to transcend both two and four wheels, keeping us at Deus Ex Machina excited in sharing all gasoline culture.

A special thank you to our partners Michael Rapetti of the Motoring Club, Luna Bondesan, and Shayan Bokaie for their support and thoughtful curation.

2,000 meters above sea level there exists a volcano that last erupted only a few short years ago.

It’s awe inspiring intensity is best experienced first hand; looking straight up from the centre of a crater, that over millions of years has been blown apart from within.

For us though, it’s a playground best enjoyed on two wheels.

The ashen dunes have become a yearly pilgrimage for the Deus Temple rats and this year was no different.

A crew of Californians, Forrest Minchinton, Nick LaPaglia, Todd Cram and Micah Davis, loaded up the bikes and made the daylong journey across Bali, onto the ferry and hitting the edge of East Java the twisting roads that meandered there way up into the clouds.

Arriving to this part desert, part lush green jungle scape, never ceases to prompt a crooked smile across all and sundry.

No wonder that the next few days flew past, filled with some good ol’ fashion dune carving, from sun up to sundown, ending our days with with wonderful evenings of laughter punctuated with platefuls of simple local rice dishes, an abundance of cold beers and stories that grew taller with each telling.

Days like these stick in your brain, like sand in your teeth.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your work?

Well, I started restoring cars when I was 17 years old. Cars, like skateboarding, were my thing ever since I was little, even if this was not the case for the rest of my family. I ended up repairing and reselling cars all by myself, to make a living from my passion. Then, this activity ended up overtaking my other work. From there, I started my company Cobalt Automobiles.

Take us over the history of this Porsche which we shot together

This is a car that was in the hands of Robert Buchet, a private racing team driver. He did Le Mans in 1966 with it, and crashed. He didn’t want to repair the frame and bought another one from Porsche. The next season, he won the French circuit championship. Afterwards, as cars evolved with the passing years, the 906 changed hands many times, eventually ending up in the possession of Eugene Paoli from 1970 to 1974. In 1974, he was touring around Corsica. He had his picture taken, which made the cover of Echappement Magazine. Two turns later, he blew out the steering and ended up in a ditch. He finally left the car in a barn until Dieter Eisner stumbled upon it in 1994. This guy is a huge connaisseur of these kinds of cars. He entirely restored it, starting from the original frame and engine, made it new again. He ran around with it from 1995 to 2003, adding on 100 000 kilometres in races: Le Mans Classic, Goodwood, Targa Florio, Silverstone Classic, Nuremburg Classic, Spa Classic, etc. The car was acquired in 2006 by the current owner, and even more original parts have been restored.

Give us a little story about the sale

It was a Spanish guy, he told me “that’s great, I’ll take the car, there’s a truck showing up tomorrow”. He was a farmer, and the next day a truck arrived, filled with potatoes. They loaded the car, put the potatoes on top, and took off.

What is the future of your garage?

I subscribe to a movement that is breaking down traditional business codes. We each do this in our own way. No suits and ties. Jeans and sneakers, this either makes sense for you or it doesn’t. I do it like this because of who I am. The majority of my clients are attracted to me, my expertise, and not my brand. Some of them don’t even know the name of my company. I run a garage as I see fit, that is to say sticking to the things I am best at : new Ferraris, 2 or 3 beautiful Aston Martins. I am less specialized in newer Porsches, as there are too many people in this market.

How do you identify with Deus Ex Machina?

We knew each other through mutual friends, then became friends ourselves. I have the impression of being on the same wavelength as you, we go against traditional business ideas. We are part of the same movement, and we both respond to the different needs of a different clientele. We don’t think according to a marketing plan, we think and act as we do because that’s who we are. You will never see me give a bottle of champagne to someone who has bought a car from the collection, namely because I don’t want to, but also because I think it’s stupid to give them alcohol. Another important point shared between us : if tomorrow I sell my business, give up my position, put it under new management without me, Simon Duchassin, Cobalt Automobiles would mean nothing. It’s like the creativity of Carby (co-founder and artistic director of DeusEx Machina), it is beneficial for Deus, he is making its own photos and creations, and you could tell yourself that the brand is the representation of one person. The soul of our brands is linked to one single person. And lastly, I’ve never had the feeling of what we do together being truly “work”, and I like that a lot.

What’s the next car you are going to bring us?

I would really like to leave a Groupe 4 Rallye for you, it works with your upcoming Summer 2020 collection. Then for some in-store atmosphere my Africa Twin, which I am restoring right now as Rothmans and the Ténéré sitting in the store here, those would be nice too !

A little bird tells us you are going to start racing again.

I did already in a very loose way, some competitive rallys. I did the Tour Auto two times, some little local races, some track days, but nothing in a professional manner. It was really for the pleasure of it. But yes this year I’m taking it seriously ! What is the most beautiful car you ever sold? It was a Porsche Carrerra GT, midnight blue, brown interior, utterly unique. It was my unicorn as one says. Other than that, I have sold other cars like my 205 GTI, which was bought by the President of the Peugeot Museum. That was extremely gratifying for me.

You look out of the window as you use to do every Sunday, and everything seems the same, but… this Sunday, the 26 th of January, is different. This is the day in which you break the chain of monotony, and you step away from your normal life, doctors, barbers, architects, men, women, old and young, all banding together, everything else is put aside to become an ‘Arctic’.

The very first edition of L’Artica hosted under the DeusCYCLEWORKS banner, went down over the week with more than seven hundred riders, all of whom braved the cold and answered the call. All of them with vintage jersey, vintage bikes and good old vintage cycling spirit.

Bizarre people, loyal participants and professionals throwing themselves in the rumble, sharing the road, the meals and cheering together. This is the kind of cycling we love – an informal pedal that gathers people from everywhere. We had guests from Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Australia, USA and Argentina.
The whole village of Lonigo and surrounds gets involved to put together an epic day.
As participants get hungry for the ride, four pit-stops serving delicious local food has been prepared and managed by volunteers. The 50km track runs through parks, vineyard and villages.

The helter-skelter of the Colli Berici (the picturesque hills of Lonigo) challenged the old rusty bikes – some didn’t reach the end, but at the end, the balance was totally positive. Not finishing the ride could be seen as a positive, the ones who had to quit had more time to dedicate time to their stomaches … not so bad for them.
Deus Cycleworks and L’Artica invite you all at next edition and thanks all the sponsors, the supporting municipalities and the technical sponsors for their contribution to the event:

Volkswagen Italia, Athena
Comune di Lonigo, Comune di Val Liona, Comune di Sarego, Comune di Alonte
Cinelli, Eroica, Bianchi, Officine Vivaldi, Recoaro, Campagnolo, Selle Royal, Birra Cimbra, Caseificio Albiero, Settecento 33, Corte de Pieri, Prosciuttificio San Marco, ASI, Vespa Club Lonigo and thanks to the more than 100 volunteers who helped make the event possible.

————————————————

Volkswagen Italia, Athena
Comune di Lonigo, Comune di Val Liona, Comune di Sarego, Comune di Alonte
Cinelli, Eroica, Bianchi, Officine Vivaldi, Recoaro, Campagnolo, Selle Royal, Birra Cimbra, Caseificio Albiero, Settecento 33, Corte de Pieri, Prosciuttificio San Marco, ASI, Vespa Club Lonigo e agli oltre 100 volontari.

“A functional and practical 4-cycle motorcycle with a purity of purpose.”

A beautiful machine, with an interesting back story.

2014 – Venice, CA – To continue fulfilling the purpose of being a ‘trusty whip’ for whenever Dare was in America, the engine was rebuilt when it started showing signs of untrustworthiness.

2015 – Latigo Garage, Malibu – It was decided that the aesthetics deserved a rejuvenation, so the entire bike was disassembled, made nice, and then reassembled with the majority of the stock components left in the parts bin. Boltified to the ‘T’ and retaining its classic glory and distinctive Triumph rumble, it is now surely able to hold its own on the streets against even the best old, heavy, slow bike. The final result is an amazingly simple, functional and practical 4-cycle motorcycle with a purity of purpose and clean lines. The subtle artistic direction for this bike was suggested by NP and the build was confuddled together in Latigo Garage by JH with help from Deus friends – Dirty Dave, BA Moto and Boris the Painter.

2016 (April) – Port Of Los Angeles – Mistakenly put into the wrong freight container, the Triumph T140 floated across the Atlantic Ocean, ending up in England, coincidentally the birthplace of the bike itself. With a shrug of the shoulders and a shake of the head, it turned and floated back across the Atlantic to the Port Of Los Angeles.

2016 (Aug) – Port Of Los Angeles – Too good to be only ridden when visiting America, Deus Founder Dare Jennings shipped the motorcycle back to his hometown of Sydney to be his daily rider. The Triumph T140 floated across the Pacific Ocean to its new home below the equator.

2016 (Oct)– Sydney, Australia – The 1977 Triumph T140v is fresh off the boat and and can be found ripping around its new home at the House Of Simple Pleasures.

2020 – Sydney, Australia – After one of the most destructive summer of bushfires in Australia, Dare generously decides to raffle off his beloved Triumph, in an effort to raise money to those affected by the fires.

People from all over the globe, generously give money to not only help the Australian people, wildlife and environment, but to also have a lucky shot at owning a piece of Deus history. The raffle was run over a week, raising $69,000, which was then split between the Red Cross, WIRES and the Rural Fire Service.

The lucky winner was Chris Sewell, congratulations, we hope you enjoy the bike, and will add another chapter to it’s already interesting story.

Thank you to everyone, the world over, who put their hands in their pockets to help the Australian Bushfire Relief appeal.

Fresh from kicking open the doors of our new home in Hout Bay, a bunch of intrepid Landy enthusiasts gathered on a stormy morning, enthusiastic to make the scenic drive from one side of Chapman’s Peak to the other.

It was a colourful bunch of machines – call it a lesson in primary colours; as six old Landys, took the meandering road that would lead us to the wild stretch of beach in Noordhoek, a journey beautifully captured by photographer @stephen_bauer.

It was a day pertinent to us, a splash of colour added to a seemingly gloomy forecast.

A day to celebrate the opening of The Deus Homestead Of Perpetuity, by driving from Our Old Cape Dutch place of worship and back along this winding stretch for Deus Craft beers and local fare.

The day was joyous as it brought us together for a nostalgic adventure, and back again, to share in our mutual appreciation of all that we hold so dear to our hearts.

Good times, good wheels, and good beer in this blessed place we call home,
