DEUS TOKYO SURF SWAP 2016 - MAY 14 and 15th
The Deus Tokyo Surf Swap 2016 was a 2-day affair held over the weekend of the 14th/15th May.
It was Japan’s first time holding the established Deus event that’s been so well received at the Sydney, Venice Beach & Bali Deus Flagships. The Harajuku Residence of Impermanence took us back to the good ol' days and old ways with a basement filled with impressive collections of vintage skateboards, SCHWINN bicycles, clothing, magazines, records and more from the 1960’s to 80’s. The walls inside and out were decorated with classic vintage surfboards from the same era. A collapsible surfboard originally made for the seminal 1966 surf movie "Endless Summer" was the main display that attracted many a surfer visiting the event, with an apparent value of 1,200,000 JPY (approx. 11,000 USD).
Vintage stores and dedicated collectors came to 'swap' their goods, including Japanese skateboard pioneer, 61 year old Aki Akiyama - who brought a collection of his historic memorabilia. From expensive novelties to affordable kid's stuff, stickers, board games and bikinis, the Residence was a fun house of vintage surf n skate. Deus staff entertained kids and adults alike with Surf Swap t-shirt screen-printing and a special food menu put on for the day. The newest DEUS family member, Forrest Minchinton was shaping a quiver of boards all weekend in the Residence's shaping room. And on Saturday night, Forrest’s short movie, “DUST" directed by Dustin Humphrey was played for the party goers waiting for Mr.DJ to start spinning the tunes. Forrest's impressive performance on both bike and surfboard wowed the audience - followed by the South to Sian trailer to inform everyone of the Japan premiere to come a few nights later, on May 19th at Vision in Shibuya.

5月14日、15日と2日間にかけて行われた「DEUS TOKYO SURF SWAP 2016」。本国シドニーや、カリフォルニア・ベニスでは既に人気のイベントだが、日本での開催は今回が初。DEUS原宿店を会場とし、地下と外壁に'60年代～'80年代のヴィンテージ・サーフボードがずらりと並んだほか、スケートボード、シュウインのMTB、古着、雑誌、レコードなど様々な古き良きアイテムがラインナップした。サーフボードの目玉には'60年代のサーフムービー「エンドレスサマー」に登場予定だったという120万円相当のホビーのヴィンテージボードが登場。出店は個人、ショップを問わず、なかにはスケートボード界のリビング・レジェンド、アキ秋山氏も出店に参加し、貴重なコレクションが放出された。普段お目にかかれない高額商品から、格安のキッズアイテム、ステッカー、ボードゲーム、ビキニなども陳列しそのすべてがヴィンテージ。スクリーンプリントされたDEUSオリジナルTシャツの販売や、フード＆ドリンクなど、大人から子供までが楽しめる2日間となった。
またイベントでは、DEUSに新加入した若きホープ、フォレスト・ミンチントンがライブシェイピングを披露。5月19日に渋谷VISIONで公開されるフィルム「SOUTH TO SIAN」のトレーラーも紹介され、さらにダスティン・ハンフリーが撮り下ろしたフォレストのショートフィルム「DUST」も上映された。フォレストのモトクロスとシェイプにおける、類まれなる才能を感じることができる壮大な映像に、会場が歓声に包まれた。
ヴィンテージボードに囲まれながらモダンシェイプを披露するフォレストや、急遽’70年代のスケートボーダー・ファッションに身を包み、ダウンヒルをおこなったハリソン・ローチなど、「DEUS TOKYO SURF SWAP 2016」は温故知新な世界を体現できるイベントとして大盛況に終わった。
