Welcome to Deus Silverlake
Following in the footsteps of the Venice Beach flagship space - opened in 2012 - Silver Lake similarly takes a lead from the cultural undercurrent that permeates the brands DNA.
Located at Sunset Junction in Silver Lake this venture is a transformative step for Deus Ex Machina, and a familiar full circle moment for Deus founder Dare Jennings who cut his entrepreneurial teeth as owner-operator of Sydney’s iconic independent record store Phantom Records over 40 years ago. Fast forward to 2024, anyone paying attention will know that music rushed back into the Deus bloodstream via Deus Records & Publishing. Weekly live events are held across the globe in Deus locations, with spiritual homes in Tokyo, Bordeaux, and now, the newly opened concept store in Silver Lake.
The best of Deus apparel across the Classic, Records and Customs ranges sits alongside locally produced ceramics, a curated selection of books and a wall of vinyl records to be enjoyed on our vintage Hifi setup. A sound desk takes up residency in the shopfront window - a spot for both local and visiting international DJs to spin records for the neighboring community.
As if Kengo Kuma and Donald Judd had a love child, the design of Silver Lake utilizes the simplicity of long grain douglas fir and other natural materials - an ode to Judd that culminates in a contemporary retail space. Together with traditional Japanese framing methods, the store represents form and function - the main shelving and grid structure inspired by traditional sound panels used in recording studios, sound reverberates evenly throughout the space.
The store promises an immersive experience that blends the familiar with the new, contributing to the next chapter of Deus Ex Machina’s evolution and uniting diverse enthusiasts and audiophiles in the heart of Silver Lake. Deus Silver Lake has been masterfully built to weave together curation, community building and commerce into a unique tapestry all under one roof.
Located at 3815 Sunset Boulevard, Deus Silver Lake is designed in partnership by Deus co-founder, Carby Tuckwell and Stefan Wigand of Casa Studio. Construction by Tobias Hayduk, Who Built It and Gold Ghost Vintage Works.
Last Friday, we were blessed by a rich and diverse tapestry of music, guests, and friends, both new and old, who came together to transform the official opening of our latest Deus store in Silver Lake, California, into a true celebration of community and music.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the artists who graced us with their talents; Jungle Jungle from Reverberation Radio for his eclectic mix of surf psych and otherworldly beats, Adam Sherette for the tropical vibes, and Gem and Colloboh for lasting energy infusion.
We were blessed by the live country ballads of Regina Ferguson, followed by the sunset serenade of Adam and Sid from Winn Winn. As the evening unfolded, EJ Worland and Aaron Childs brought soulful and jazz-infused sounds to our new home, including an impromptu duet with our newest next-door neighbour - thanks Malia! Local trio Mo0d unlocked free music vignettes with spiritual abandon.
Brains officially blasted and closely followed by Chalk Teeth with drum machine in tow. The night culminated with Bryce Byrd's mesmerising synth performance, the perfect landing and close to the evening. Within the mix were our special resident DJ’s and Deus friends, Jesus Fernandez, AIF-Foo and Lorenzo Daniels, whose considered sounds were the perfect accompaniment to the evening’s line-up.
A huge thank you goes to those who came out to enjoy some incredible music, a delicious feed care of Monty’s Good Burgers, and a stellar lineup of beverages from our friends at at Madre Mezcal, 805 Beer and Rancho West.
